Billboard Album Certification

When an album sells an extraordinary amount of copies it will become certified by billboard for it's triumphant feat. If an album sells 500,000 or more copies it is certified gold. If an album sells 1,000,000 or more copies it is certified platinum. When an album sells more that 10,000,000 copies it is certified diamond. In common speech and talk this is not so however. In common speech, between 1,000,000 and 10,000,000 the number of times certified is referred to as platinum, for example if you sell 6,500,000 copies you would be certified 6.5 times platinum, not .65 times diamond. After you reach diamond many people still refer to sales as platinum, for example Michael Jackson's Thriller album sold over 65,000,000 copies, so this album would be certified 65 times platinum, not 6.5 times diamond.
