The Patch Bay

Keep yourself organized with a patch bay. One day you'll come to find that all your cables and cords are all mangled and you don't know which is which or what they do and you're constantly tripping over them. You've finally decided you had enough . You take some sharp cutting scissors out to finally snip your newfound enemies and stop the madness. Suddenly you remember your friend's studio and how he had his wires organized in a type of box thing.

This box thing is called a patch bay and it is how professional studios manage their cables. The can come with either XLR or TRS (stereo 1/4") jacks. You put a patch bay usually on a rack mount. They usually have 2 rows, with 24 jacks on each row and the same number on the opposite side. You put your equipment and instrument cable's inputs and outputs in the back, route them to the front where you will use shorter cable to send this signal to some place else. Ultimately, the patch bay will give your home studio more of a professional touch. The con is that although the patch bay itself is relatively inexpensive, buying a new cable for each cable you plug into it may be very costly.
